About Me

My name is Zoë Moolman

I am a multidisciplinary artist from South Africa working across fashion, graphic design, photography, and film—exploring identity, adornment, and care through collaborative making. With a background in fashion design, my practice now extends beyond the garment, weaving together textiles, visual storytelling, and socially engaged projects.

Having studied in South Africa and completing a Master’s degree in Inter-relational Art Practices in The Netherlands, my work centres around bodily expression, co-creation, and reclaiming visibility for marginalised identities—particularly fat, queer, and undocumented voices.

My approach is hands-on, intuitive, and research-driven. Through fabric, lens, and lived experience, I use making as a way to challenge norms, affirm identities, and build tools for empathy and understanding.

Education

2023-2025
MA in Inter-relational Art Practices
Hanze University of Applied Sciences
The Netherlands

This master’s degree focuses on socially engaged, collaborative, and context-responsive art-making. Inter-relational art practices centre relationships, dialogue, and co-creation as the core of the artistic process—often prioritising care, community, and shared authorship over individual output. Through this program, I deepened my research and creative work around identity, adornment, and collaborative making, with a particular focus on fat, queer, and marginalised bodies. I graduated Cum Laude.

2020-2022
BA in Fashion Design

Fedisa

South Africa

I was selected in the Top 10 each year during my studies, with my work showcased in Fedisa’s end-of-year videos. My second-year project was published in Selin Magazine, and my final collection—a plus-size range celebrating fat bodies through bold colour and print—was later featured in a fashion event hosted by Body Lovin’ Series, highlighting underrepresented bodies in mainstream fashion.

2016-2018
BA in Social Sciences

University of Cape Town

South Africa

My majors were in Gender Studies and Sociology, with a focus on power, identity, and social structures. I was especially interested in themes around body politics, gender performance, and intersectionality—areas that continue to inform and deepen my creative practice today.

Experience

Cape Town College of Fashion Design

I delivered a guest lecture at CTCFD (Cape Town College of Fashion Design), sharing insights from my thesis Unstitching the Restrictive Seams: Reclaiming the Body Through Adornment with students and engaging in discussion around body, identity, and creative practice.

My graduation work from my Master’s degree was profiled in Metropolis M, showcasing my exploration of adornment as a tool for reclaiming identity, with a focus on collaborative garment-making and inter-relational art practices.

2025
Graphic Design
Undocumented Game of Life

I collaborated with a research team at Vrije Universiteit to design an educational board game, inspired by The Game of Life, aimed at helping educators better understand the challenges undocumented youth face in navigating the Dutch education system.

2024 - Present
Seamstress

Pink Cube

I have been assisting the Pink Cube with my skills as a seamstress in creating a collaborative artwork in the form of a quilt, that is representative of the amount of time trans people in The Netherlands have to wait in order to receive trans-specific healthcare.

2017 - 2023
Small Business Owner

Sick Puppy & My Bloody Poes Club

I started a small business in 2017, called My Bloody Poes Club, creating my own prints on T-shirts and selling them at university. Once I completed my BA in Fashion Design, I was able to start sewing my own designs and selling those under the business name Sick Puppy for a short while before moving to Amsterdam.

2023
Fashion Show

Body Lovin' Series

A few months after graduating from Fedisa, I was asked to showcase my graduate collection in a fashion show hosted by Body Lovin’ Series, a platform celebrating bodies often excluded from mainstream fashion.

Selin Magazine

A dress I created at the end of my second year at Fedisa—the Floral Dream Dress—was featured in Selin Magazine.

During my graduate year at Fedisa, I interned at a start-up business which designed and manufactured environmentally sustainable sex-toys by 3D printing them with hemp, which made them biodegradable.
