Graduation Exhibition

Groningen

A textile installation for my Master’s graduation exhibition: 48 handwoven tiles made from scraps and selvage, created alongside the film as both record and metaphor — transforming what is usually discarded into something reimagined and revalued.

In order to exhibit this research, I felt it was just as important to have a textile installation as it was to show the film. I created 48 handwoven tiles from the scraps and off-cuts of all the sewing projects featured in the work. I’ve always been sentimentally attached to fabric and tend to hold onto remnants for far too long. Weaving them became a way to honour the material — and, over time, it grew into a metaphor within my practice.

Many of these scraps were selvage: the stiff edge of fabric that prevents fraying, usually marked with colour dots or text that show its origin, but always cut away before the garment can be made. I began to see this as a powerful parallel — like the rigid structures, histories, or expectations we inherit. They shape us, but often need to be released before we can move freely. By weaving the selvage, I wanted to show how even what feels restrictive or discarded can be transformed into something else entirely. The curtain of tiles hung with the film as a quiet record of what was left behind, and as a reminder of what can be rewoven.

I was interviewed by Metropolis M where my graduation work was featured in their magazine, showcasing my exploration of adornment as a tool for reclaiming identity, with a focus on collaborative garment-making and inter-relational art practices.
